What did you love to play as a child? What did you just naturally know how to do without needing to be taught? How did you experience the long summer days of your youth? When my boys were young I remember them bringing me to their fort. Joshua would explain in detail how the fort was laid out and why things were where they were. Today he’s an Army logistics officer. Jake was a “lookout,” and when a car would start to drive by he’d have us all hide so we wouldn’t be found. He was recently trained as an Army Cavalry Scout. This is how I remember their childhood, and I can see a connection to how they entertained themselves when they were young and what they’ve chosen as their occupations in life. As a child, I recall building a club with cardboard that I had collected. There were magazines, snacks, and in order to be admitted, you had to show me a Chiquita Banana sticker. The community and learning I offer now is a direct thread to what I did naturally as a child. It brings me honest to goodness freedom, joy, and meaning. It is in alignment with my unique and natural play. My thought provocation for you today is to explore your own childhood passions. Dwell there. Remember how it felt in your body to be in your natural play zone How does that connect to your purpose as an adult? Recognize what you’ve always done throughout your entire life. Did you build forts? Create community? Take things apart to figure out how they worked? Study? Sing? Dress up? You can find a list of universal childhood passions below for inspiration. Life is not this or that. Life is this and that. Noticing and naming your natural expression is a gentle way to bring it to your consciousness, to increase your awareness and draw it out of the shadow. For now, just know that it exists.
